The inelastic nature and the resulting energy exchange in collisions of intrinsic localized modes has been an open problem for quite a while. A detailed numerical investigation was conducted by Dr. Doi (see Phys. Rev. E 68 066608(2003)), which called for a theoretical explanation for the mechanism of energy exchange.
In the talk, starting with a regularized PDE model for intrinsic localized modes in FPU lattice, a simplified ODE model is further derived based on the modified conservation law. The direct simulations for the ODE model achieve a good agreement with the numerical results in FPU lattice. Further, an explanation for the formation of chaotic intrinsic localized modes is obtained.
