Stability of the flow in a heated rectangular duct |

We discuss the problem of the stability of laminar flow in a straight duct with a rectangular cross-section. It has long been known that the pressure-driven flow in the configuration with unity aspect ratio (square duct) is stable with respect to all infinitesimal perturbations (Tatsumi & Yoshimura, 1990). Here we add a homogeneous internal heat source, which is shown to destabilize the flow when the inflectional properties of the laminar velocity profile are modified. In the second part of the talk, we consider the non-linear evolution of selected perturbations obtained by linear stability theory, computed with the aid of direct numerical simulation. |
