Vietnam-Japan trade and friendship relation has the significant potential to develop fast in recent years. Bilateral trade exchange was 248 billion yen in 1995 and increased to more 700 billion yen last year. Vietnam and Japan develops an intensive cooperation in cable bridges construction, namely Can Tho Bridge funded by JBIC with cost to JBY 38 billion and Bai Chay Bridge funded by Japan through ODA with an estimated cost to 70 million USD (Japanese partners of Shimizu and Sumitomo-Mitsui). The problems of monitoring, maintenance and vibration control of cable bridges are of high interest.
In the report firstly the cooperation research in the vibration control of pendulum type systems is briefly outlined. Some technical aspects carried out at Institute of Mechanics in the field of taut cable vibration control are then presented in order to show how the scientists from mechanical and civil engineering may cooperate. Further, possible activities and proposals for developing Vietnam-Japan scientific and friendship cooperation are discussed. A short introduction to Vietnam, its landscapes and people, Vietnamese Academy of Science and Technology is also presented.
