Boundary conditions at the vapor-liquid interface |

The traditional kinetic theory treatment of boundary conditions at the interface separating a liquid from its vapor phase has recently been questioned in a few investigations based on molecular dynamics simulations. In particular, deviations from a Maxwellian distribution function have been found for evaporated and reflected molecules, even in equilibrium conditions. In order to achieve a better understanding of molecular exchanges between the condensed and the vapor phases, an Enskog-Vlasov kinetic equation is formulated to describe both the liquid and vapor. The distribution functions of evaporated and reflected molecules are reconstructed from DSMC simulations of the linear and non-linear version of the kinetic equation. The possibility of a hydrodynamic treatment of the problem by a 13-moment approximation of the Enskog-Vlasov equation is also presented and discussed. |
