On the dynamics of isolated collisionless plasmas |

Collisionless plasmas have many important physical applications. They are used for instance to model the dynamics of the solar wind and the ionosphere. In this talk I consider the motion of a collisionless plasma which is isolated from incoming radiation and prove that, for small initial data, this dynamics is described by the retarded relativistic Vlasov-Maxwell system. The latter system is formed by the Vlasov continuity equation coupled to the retarded electromagnetic field. Moreover I show that in the limit to future null infinity the retarded field is null and outwardly directed and prove a formula which gives the rate of energy lost in form of outgoing radiation. The analogies to the dipole formula in electrodynamics and the Bondi mass loss formula in general relativity will be addressed. |
