Various types of interfaces and their influence on the properties of materials will be discussed. First, grain boundaries in bcc metals, their new classification based on the geometrical considerations and supported by systematic experiments on grain boundary chemistry. Second, migration of well defined grain boundaries studied experimentally in a classical way but also in situ using European Synchrotron Radiation Facility. For simulation of boudary motion, methods of cellular automata are used. Third, the magnetisation of iron thin films was investigated by ab initio methods. Finally, the interfaces in intermetallics (TiAl) will be described: generalized stacking faults, rotational interfaces separating variants of orderd structure and compatibility stresses arising at grain boundaries between PST crystals. |
