In the last decade, researches on interfacial mechanics mainly focused on the analysis of the singular stress field for an interface edge or crack tips. Some fracture criteria have been proposed for interface cracks, and the theory has been also proposed by the author for evaluating an interface edge. Based on these fundamental studies, recently, the research in this field shows more interest on the engineering application. Some new interfacial phenomena have been clarified, and numerical approaches, which are appropriate to determine the evaluation parameters, have been developed. Convenient strength evaluation method for engineering purpose also calls a strong interest. In this lecture, the history of interfacial mechanics is introduced briefly at first, the theory of interface model is also explained and discussed secondly, to explain why a complicate interface layer can be simplified as an ideal interface. The definition of stress intensity factors of an interface crack is discussed from the view of engineering application thirdly. Some new criteria or approaches for evaluating an interface edge are introduced fourthly. The theoretical results about contact interface and their application in fretting fatigue are presented fifthly. Some analysis techniques and evaluation of coating problems are introduced sixthly. Finally, a conclusion contains unsolved problems in interfacial mechanics will be presented. |
